How to Write a Novel With Mind Mapping

Many people who write novels don’t think about getting a novel writing software. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, the problem with many novel writers is that they lack the ability to remember the main point of the novel. In fact, I find myself writing and re-writing the novel about every week!

One tool I like to use for novel writing software is my own mind mapping software. I use it every day and I’ve found that it really does help you remember what you are trying to get across. Here are some of the steps you need to take to start your own mind map…

Before you start any writing exercise, you need to clearly define a particular scene or section of the story. Create a folder with the title of the scene, the action, and the dialogue in that scene. Make sure that the folder is organized and it is easy to locate. You don’t want to have to search around before you’re done.

Your folder should contain a lot of different pictures. You can use paperclips, felt tip pens, and even markers to write down different things you will need to do in order to move from one scene to the next. All of these items will make the scenes easier to remember as they are added to your folder.

If you can, try to write out scenes that have many different viewpoints. This helps you to remember what is going on in more detail.

The actual action you are writing about should be divided into sections that you can create yourself. When you come up with your first section, take a minute to draw it out so you can figure out how you are going to proceed. Use separate paperclips to label each part and put them in a folder for reference later. Each section should contain at least two different scenes within a scene.

Step four: After you’ve taken some time to create your folder, take some time to read through your work. This is the most important step of all. Find out if you really understand your story and if you can write it out in a way that is easily understood by other people.

Step five: Once you know that you understand your story, go back over your work and proofread. If you do miss anything, talk to someone about it. Once you feel that you understand it sounds good, send your novel to a ghost writer. She’ll get it checked for grammar and then rewrite it for you!
