Mahouka Koukou No Rettousei – Review
The protagonist of Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, Yuuji Hirai, is a hapless guy who has lost everything in a sudden calamity. Despite his lack of assets, he must still work hard to get a job as an employee at a manga magazine and, therefore, has no money to spare. It is in this simple lifestyle that a mysterious vampire awakens from a seven year slumber. Since the vampire is known as the “Black Lord” in the area where he resides, he is a victim of fear and disdain by most people in the town.
Yuuji’s childhood friend Tamao Kamishiro reveals to him that Rettousei is already a vampire before. He went on a long journey and met a lot of other vampires in the process. Apparently, all of them are in agreement that Rettousei is a vampire with a full understanding of the word and does not want to change back into human. It is these people who decide to entrust him as their student so that he can learn about what it means to be a vampire.
In this light novel series, Rettousei is indeed the “Black Lord”. He is a vampire that prefers to stay among humans instead of being out in the dark and death-free forest. He has learned that he is better off with humans than even among his own kind, but in exchange for this, he will occasionally transform into a human to do business in the real world. With this, Rettousei becomes the type of student to whom all his fellow students tend to lean.
If you have already read light novels or even manga from Japanese style novels, then you might feel like this new light novel’s author is doing something unique and original. Actually, the title is pretty much the same as the cover of the first volume of the light novel itself. It would be unfair to expect something special from a title that sounds like the name of a Japanese television show, but it can be said that this one is quite different from most light novels on the market.
What makes this light novel so special is its plot and characters. While many other light novels are pure stories of a protagonist in a failing relationship, this one takes place in a truly complex and interesting setting. By showing both sides of the vampire theme, this light novel brings in a unique perspective.
There are people who might find the concept of becoming a vampire to be very disturbing. Those who haven’t had an experience with such a transformation might consider it more of a fantasy rather than reality. Those who have experienced it, however, may agree that this concept is nothing short of a nightmare.
Rettousei himself, on the other hand, has done things similar to those who have experienced supernatural occurrences. As his ambitions go from being a good person to a bad one, he also continues to follow in the footsteps of vampires who once bore a grudge. In the end, the question of whether or not a vampire can change back into a human is left for the readers to answer for themselves.
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei is an exciting light novel that has captured the interest of a lot of people. It is an excellent mix of vampires and humans and some philosophical elements that make it interesting and worthwhile to read. The story is simple yet rich, full of action and beauty, and captivating all at the same time.
